Literacy Training for Social Studies Educators (2012/2013)

In this workshop, educators examined the essential role of literacy in social studies, grounded in the belief that all teachers are teachers of reading, writing, and thinking. Drawing on David McCullough’s idea that “writing is thinking at the end of a pen,” participants explored how critical analysis of texts and content-specific writing can deepen students’ understanding of complex historical and social concepts. Through practical strategies and collaborative discussion, teachers learned how to support students in interpreting sources, constructing evidence-based arguments, and expressing ideas with clarity and purpose. The session highlighted how intentional integration of literacy practices strengthens analytical thinking and empowers students to engage more meaningfully with content.
